Bombardier to Refurbish 30 Two-Car Configuration of the SGM II
Vehicles for NS Reizigers
BERLIN -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 18, 2007 -- Bombardier
Transportation has been commissioned by Nederlandse Spoorwegen
Reizigers, a subsidiary of the Dutch railway company Nederlandse
Spoorwegen (NS), to refurbish 30 two-car units of the SGM II
vehicles. The contract represents a value of approximately 40 million
euros ($54 million US) and covers an upgrade of both the technical
and design elements of the vehicles, originally built between 1974
and 1979 by the Bombardier plant in Aachen (Germany).
The refurbishment will be carried out in the Bombardier workshop in
Randers, Denmark, between April 2007 and 2009. It consists of
modernizing the electrical parts, complete renewal of the interior
(including the floors), compressors and static converters, as well as
installation of choppers and re-painting. The refurbishment
operations will ensure these vehicles meet the technical compliance
requirements for the SGM III, which were also rebuilt by Bombardier.
Bombardier has been selected by the Dutch Railways because of the
passenger satisfaction and ridership on SGM III, the SGM III fleet
availability and interoperability with SGM II, as well as the SGM III
vehicle reliability and the parts supply agreement on both fleets.
Rik Dobbelaere, President Bombardier Transportation Services
comments: "This contract is a sign of confidence in the team who won
the contract following the excellent job they recently delivered for
NS on their type SGM III vehicles. The superior technical skills of
our Randers team in Denmark, along with competitive pricing and
production planning convinced NS that Bombardier offered the best
solution."
Jacques Huberts, CEO NS Reizigers: "The refurbished SGM III Sprinters
are highly appreciated by NS and our passengers. We are glad that
from 2008 we will be able to offer our customers more Sprinters of
the same comfort level."
