Kemira committed to enhancing energy efficiency at production sites in Finland

Kemira Oyj Press Release October 13, 2008 at 9.30 (CET+1) Kemira has signed a voluntary energy efficiency agreement, introduced by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy and the Confederation of Finnish Industries EK for the purpose of promoting energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries in Finland. Under this agreement, Kemira undertakes to enhance the efficiency of its energy consumption and to alter operation methods to facilitate continuous improvement of energy efficiency. Kemira will also strive to improve the efficiency of logistics and energy consumption in transport operations. The agreement covers seven Kemira production sites in Finland: Oulu, Vaasa, Äetsä, Joutseno, Kuusankoski, Kokkola and Siilinjärvi. The agreement is valid until the end of the year 2016. Reaching of the directive energy conservation target, set under the agreement for the year 2016, will be assessed in 2013. "Although the agreement in question is a national one, we are implementing it globally. This results in higher cost savings and benefits from enhancing the efficiency of energy consumption, alongside more positive environmental impacts. For 10 years now, we have been engaged in the previous energy saving program, accumulating best practices for enhancing energy efficiency. We will incorporate the objectives of the efficiency agreement in our own operating models and energy policy. This will facilitate long-term systematic implementation of energy efficiency", says Elina Engman, Vice President, Energy. The agreement forms part of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy's efforts to curb climate change, based on international commitments and the national energy and climate strategy. Finland's national goal is to achieve 9 per cent energy conservation by 2016. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy supports investments related to improvement of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in enterprises that have signed the agreement.
