Cambridge Display Technology Announces Major New Development in Display Technology

Total Matrix Addressing Extends Viability of Passive Matrix OLED Displays by Reducing Power Consumption, Increasing Panel Size CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, Nov. 15, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) (Nasdaq:OLED) today announced a major new development in OLED display technology: Total Matrix Addressing, or TMA(tm). Prior to TMA, large OLED displays have only been feasible by using active matrix (AM) technology incorporating an expensive thin-film transistor (TFT) layer. Passive matrix (PM) displays, which are driven by cheaper external chips, have been restricted to smaller screen sizes. TMA is a technology which potentially can be incorporated into driver chips to bring active matrix capabilities to passive matrix displays. TMA reduces power consumption and enhances panel lifetime for a given pixel count in passive matrix displays. Measurements on small passive matrix displays that incorporated the TMA solution, demonstrated at least a 50% reduction in power consumption or exhibited double the display luminescence at the same power consumption. "Until now, there have been only two ways to drive an OLED display: passive matrix, which offers a simpler and lower cost solution but is limited to small sizes due to power consumption demands, and active matrix, which offers a cost-effective and practical solution at larger panel sizes and higher resolutions, but is more complex and highly capital intensive, putting it out of reach for many manufacturers," said Dr. David Fyfe, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CDT. "With TMA, CDT is potentially able to offer a compelling alternative solution that extends the capabilities of PM display technology into the AM space, by reducing power consumption or at the same power, allowing increased luminescence or increased resolution. In addition, TMA can expand the range of panel sizes that can be addressed using PM drivers." The TMA driving system applies both to polymer and small molecule OLED displays. CDT is currently considering how to bring the technology to market in the shortest possible time. A working demonstrator has been created using individual electronic components that exploit the new driver and image processing technologies. This will be developed further in the coming months. CDT is in discussion with OLED display producers and IC driver companies with a view to commencing design work for commercialising TMA as soon as possible. A demonstration of the technology will be presented at the Intertech OLEDs 2006 Conference in San Diego on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. For more information on TMA, contact CDT at info@cdtltd.co.uk. About CDT Cambridge Display Technology is a pioneer in the development of polymer organic light emitting diodes (P-OLEDs) and their use in a wide range of electronic display products used for information management, communications and entertainment. P-OLEDs are part of the family of OLEDs, which are thin, lightweight and power efficient devices that emit light when an electric current flows. P-OLEDs offer an enhanced visual experience and superior performance characteristics compared with other flat panel display technologies such as liquid crystal displays, and have the key advantage that they can be applied in solution using printing processes. Founded in 1992, the company is headquartered in Cambridge, U.K. and listed on the U.S. NASDAQ National Market under the symbol 'OLED'. In 2005, CDT and Sumitomo Chemical established a joint venture called Sumation(r) which develops, manufactures and sells P-OLED materials to the display industry.
