Data Domain and Luminex Partner to Address Mainframe Users' Data
Protection Needs
Vendors Enable Deduplication of Mainframe Data for Tape-Free Disk
Backup and Network-Based Disaster Recovery
SANTA CLARA, CA and RIVERSIDE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 18, 2007
-- Data Domain, a leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage
systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, and
Luminex Software, a leading developer of mainframe connectivity,
channel gateway, storage and data distribution products, today
announced that they have partnered to deliver solutions that allow
mainframe users to reap the benefits of data deduplication for
tape-free, disk-based backup and WAN vaulting of backup data for DR.
By combining Data Domain appliances with Luminex's Channel Gateway
products, mainframe users can reduce or eliminate their reliance on
tape systems and implement advanced data protection processes.
Luminex Channel Gateways enable FICON and ESCON mainframe protocol
and virtual tape connectivity to open systems Ethernet and Fibre
Channel storage systems. Data Domain's enterprise protection storage
systems use Ethernet or Fibre Channel to connect into the IT
infrastructure. Shoden Data Systems has successfully integrated the
vendors' solutions and deployed a mainframe environment data
protection solution for a leading retail company in the Republic of
South Africa.
"The combination of Luminex and Data Domain technologies opens the
door for mainframe users to deploy tape-free data protection
solutions in their environments and realize the benefits of data
deduplication technology," said Mark Slade, director of business
development for Shoden Data Systems. "Our client was able to
eliminate a tape-based backup and disaster recovery solution that was
extremely costly and time consuming to manage. The Luminex/Data
Domain solution was much faster, highly reliable and simple to
install, and our client no longer has exposure to the inherent risks
associated with physical removal of tapes for offsite storage."
"Mainframe users have not had access to some of the latest backup and
recovery technologies that were designed for open system
environments," said Tom Trainer, Senior Analyst for The Evaluator
Group. "The pairing of Data Domain and Luminex gives these users
access to data deduplication technology, disk-based backup and
network vaulting of backup data for DR purposes. This solution
illustrates that mainframe users have more data protection options
and are not limited to just tape-based systems."
Shoden Data Systems' client in South Africa is currently protecting 9
terabytes of data with its Data Domain/Luminex solution. A Luminex
Channel Gateway is used to establish connectivity with the mainframe
and present backup data to a Data Domain DD560g Gateway, which
deduplicates the data and stores it to a Hitachi Data Systems Fibre
Channel disk array acting as the local backup storage target. Data
Domain's Replicator software is used to replicate the backup data to
a Data Domain DD560 appliance in a remote location for disaster
recovery purposes. Data Domain's Global Compression(TM) technology
ensures network-efficient bandwidth use by only replicating data that
does not already reside at the remote site.
Brian Biles, Data Domain's vice president of product management,
said, "Luminex already has a strong pedigree in the mainframe
connectivity market, so we felt confident that their storage
networking technologies would allow us to make leading data
protection solutions available to mainframe users. We believe that
this effort between Luminex and Data Domain is good news for
mainframe users."
"By partnering with Data Domain, Luminex's objective of providing
transparent mainframe connectivity with open systems-based storage
networking technologies has taken yet another step forward -- this
time in the interests of bringing new and exciting data protection
capabilities to mainframe data centers. Data Domain's enterprise
protection storage solutions carry an exceptional value proposition
and we're pleased to be partnering with them to now make these
solutions available for mainframe customers," said Luminex president
Michael Saunders.
