Balen, Belgium (24 June 2009) - Nyrstar NV today announces the
outcome of its strategic review. The commencement of the review was
previously announced at Nyrstar's annual general meeting held on 29
April 2009.
One of the key outcomes following the strategic review is that
Nyrstar intends to selectively integrate its leading global
multi-metals' smelting business by expanding into mining operations,
focusing on those resources that would support Nyrstar's existing
assets and in which Nyrstar has existing expertise and proven
capability. The Company's recent acquisition of the Mid Tennessee
Zinc mine complex in Tennessee, US is an example of this strategic
direction.
Commenting on the outcome of the strategic review, Roland Junck,
Chief Executive Officer of Nyrstar, stated:
"In addition to our publicly stated focus on costs and asset
optimisation, our strategy focuses on the pursuit of value creation
through initiatives to improve and expand our existing business,
whilst conserving cash to selectively pursue opportunities to grow,
including in mining. Our aim is that smelting and mining will both
provide valuable contributions to our earnings as we strive to become
the partner of choice in essential resources for the development of a
changing world.
We continue to believe in the benefits of industry consolidation and
will evaluate opportunities as and when they arise and where they
create value for our shareholders."
